As a CrossFit coach, one of the most common concerns I hear from my members is the pressure to be perfect. We all want to perform at our best, but the truth is that striving for perfection can often lead to frustration, burnout, and even injury.
That’s why I want to talk about the importance of focusing on progress over perfection.
At Lumber City Athletics, we believe that every small step forward is worth celebrating. Whether it’s lifting a little bit more weight, running a little bit faster, or simply showing up consistently to class, every bit of progress is a victory.
Focusing on progress doesn’t mean we’re not striving for excellence. Rather, it means recognizing that excellence is a journey, not a destination. By focusing on progress, we can keep ourselves motivated, engaged, and excited about our fitness journey.
Here are some tips for making progress a priority in your CrossFit practice:
1. Set achievable goals: Rather than setting your sights on an unattainable ideal, set realistic and achievable goals for yourself. This could be anything from completing a certain number of workouts in a week to hitting a specific weightlifting PR.
2. Keep a progress journal: Tracking your progress is a great way to stay motivated and see how far you’ve come. Keep a journal or use a fitness app to log your workouts, PRs, and other achievements.
3. Celebrate the small victories: Don’t wait for a big milestone to celebrate your progress. Take the time to acknowledge and celebrate every small step forward, whether it’s a new personal best or simply showing up to class on a day when you don’t feel like it.
4. Embrace failure: Failure is a natural part of the learning process. Rather than seeing it as a setback, embrace failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. Remember, it’s not about being perfect, it’s about making progress.
At Lumber City Athletics, we believe that progress is the key to long-term success and happiness in your fitness journey. By focusing on progress over perfection, we can cultivate a growth mindset that will serve us well both in and out of the gym.
